JEE Advanced 2026 Difficulty Level & Paper Analysis
The JEE Advanced 2026 exam was conducted on May 17, 2026, and initial student and expert reactions suggest an overall moderate-to-difficult level across both papers. Mathematics was the toughest section in Paper 1, and Physics was the toughest section in Paper 2. Chemistry was the easiest, and the most-scoring came as a relief with relatively straightforward questions. Mathematics was considered moderate and slightly easier compared to JEE Advanced 2025. Paper 2 followed a similar trend with increased difficulty in Physics and moderate levels in Chemistry and Mathematics.
Check out the detailed JEE Advanced 2026 paper analysis done by Matrix JEE experts, where important topics and subject-wise breakdown analysis is done.
JEE Advanced 2026 Paper 1 Subject-wise Difficulty Analysis
The table below shows the subject-wise difficulty level based on student feedback and Matrix JEE expert JEE Advanced 2026 paper 1 analysis:
| Subject | Overall Difficulty | Tough Topics | Easy Topics | Student Reaction |
| Physics | Tough | Rotational mechanics, Electromagnetism, Optics | Modern Physics | Lengthy, calculation-heavy |
| Chemistry | Easy to Moderate | Organic reaction mechanisms | Mole concept, Ionic equilibrium | Straightforward, factual |
| Mathematics | Moderate | Calculus, Matrices | Coordinate Geometry, Probability | Easier than 2025 |
JEE Advanced 2026 Paper 2 Subject-wise Difficulty Analysis

| Mathematics | Moderate | Complex Numbers, Definite Integration | Vectors, 3D Geometry | Manageable with practice |
JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff (Expected)
Once the JEE Advanced 2026 results are out, there will be complete clarity on the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff and ranks. And students can fill in the college options accordingly in the JoSAA counselling form. Students will have to clear the subject-wise cutoff for all sections, physics, mathematics and chemistry, as well as the aggregate cutoff or minimum marks needed to be in the rank list. If a student fails to meet any one of the conditions, they will not be considered in the rank list even if their aggregate marks clear the cut-off. The official JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff will be released by IIT Roorkee along with the results on June 1, 2026, at jeeadv.ac.in along with the results.
The JEE Advanced 2026 exam was of an overall moderate to difficult level. Based on past year trends and the difficulty level of the 2026 exam, Matrix JEE experts estimate that the cutoff will approximately start at 74-85 marks out of 360 (aggregate), and the subject-wise cutoff will approximately be 7-10 marks per subject (GEN).
Difference between JEE Advanced Qualifying Cutoff & Admission Cutoff
The qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced translates to the minimum marks students have to score to be included in the JEE Advanced rank list. And the admission cutoff of the JEE Advanced exam is the opening and closing ranks required to apply in JoSAA counselling for each IIT and respective. The admission cutoff will be higher than the qualifying cutoff. Clearing the qualifying cutoff only means you get a JEE Advanced rank but it does not guarantee an IIT seat. To actually secure an IIT seat, you typically need 90+ marks for newer IITs, 150+ for mid-tier IITs, and 200+ for older, top IITs.
Here is the expected qualifying JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff category-wise:
| Category | Expected Aggregate Marks (out of 360) | Expected % | Min. Marks Per Subject |
| General (CRL) | 74 – 90 | 20.5% – 25% | 7 – 10 marks |
| GEN-EWS | 66 – 81 | 18.5% – 22.5% | 6 – 9 marks |
| OBC-NCL | 66 – 81 | 18.5% – 22.5% | 6 – 9 marks |
| SC | 37 – 46 | 10.3% – 12.8% | 3 – 5 marks |
| ST | 37 – 46 | 10.3% – 12.8% | 3 – 5 marks |
| PwD (all categories) | 37 – 46 | 10.3% – 12.8% | 3 – 5 marks |
Is your expected JEE Advanced rank under 500-1000? In such a case, a student has a high probability of getting an IIT Delhi admission seat. Check the complete process of IIT Delhi Admission 2026 beforehand to be prepared during JoSAA counselling.
JEE Advanced 2026 Marks vs Rank (Expected)

FAQs
IIT Roorkee has released the official JEE Advanced 2026 question paper PDFs on the official website jeeadv.ac.in on May 17, 2026, at 7:00 PM IST. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are available in both languages, Hindi and English, for download. Students can visit the official website and find the links to download the official question papers in the Important Announcements section.
The official JEE Advanced 2026 result date mentioned in the schedule is June 1, 2026. The result will officially be declared by IIT Roorkee on the official website, jeeadv.ac.in. To check the results, candidates will log in using their application number and date of birth as a password. Students will find out subject-wise marks, total aggregate marks out of 360, All India Rank if applicable (AIR), and category rank. The result will also confirm whether a candidate has qualified for any category-specific rank list, such as OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, or PwD.
Based on the difficulty level and exam structure of the JEE Advanced 2026 exam, 150-170 marks out of 360 are expected to be a safe score to get an IIT seat. For the general category candidate, a rank within the top 1000-2500 is expected to be considered as a safe rank. A score above 250 marks will give a rank in the top 500, making it possible to get a CSE seat at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi specifically.
The JEE Advanced 2026 rank will be calculated based on the total marks scored combining both Paper 1 and Paper 2. The total marks are 360 marks and based on the candidate response and marking scheme, the marks will be calculated out of 360. In case of a tie between two or more candidates, the rank is allotted based on the tiebreaker order. The first rule is that a candidate with higher positive marks will be allotted the rank. If the tie persists, then the candidate with higher mathematics marks is given the rank. This order is followed by Physics marks.
IIT Roorkee has released the JEE Advanced timeline officially. As per the schedule, the JEE Advanced 2026 answer key release date is May 25, 2026, on jeeadv.ac.in. On this date, the provisional key will be released, where candidates can also check their response sheet and raise objections against any answer or question. The final answer key will be released on June 1, 2026.
