NMC Increased MBBS Seats and Medical Colleges for 2025-26

The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently issued an official notification regarding the increase in MBBS seats along with the addition of new medical colleges. This increase in MBBS seats and medical colleges is expected to be applicable for the upcoming admission session. The key highlights of this notification are as follows-

1. The NMC confirmed the addition of 43 new MBBS colleges across India to strengthen the healthcare education system across the country.
2. In existing seats, 11,682 MBBS seats are added across India by NMC, which increases the overall seat matrix infrastructure across India.
3. The expansion of MBBS seats comprises government (central and state), deemed and private medical institutes.
4. The NMC also announced an increase of 8,967 MBBS-UG seats across India to encourage NEET aspirants to take admission in Postgraduate courses.
5. For the upcoming years, the government is planning to open 157 medical colleges in three phases with a total cost of ₹41,332.41 crore.

The number of seats available through the NEET exam is currently at its peak with the latest seat revision from NMC. Currently, India has approximately 1,29,603 MBBS-UG seats in private, government, JIPMER, AIIMS and all other institutes. Before this seat revision from NMC, approximately 1,18,190 MBBS seats were available in India for students to fill. Now, the overall number of MBBS colleges has also increased from 780 (approximately) to 824 (approximately). The AIIMS institute cutoff marks are generally higher in comparison with other medical colleges. Generally, AIIMS cutoffs are 680+ across all institutes throughout the years. In 2024, AIIMS Delhi had the highest cutoff marks with 720 marks, while the lowest cutoff was of AIIMS Deogarh with 680 marks. In 2025, the overall cutoff was slightly lower in comparison with the previous year, which was 656 in AIIMS Delhi (the Highest) and 557 in AIIMS Deogarh (the lowest).
